Larbert Baptist Church

Member Testimony

Phil McCulloch

My name is Phil, I am 38 yrs of age and have lived in Larbert for 14 years. I am married to Elaine and have three children, my eldest son is Alex, he is 11 yrs old, then comes Amy who is 7, followed by Matthew who is age 6. We live in Larbert near to Ladeside School.

My secular employment takes me to Falkirk where I am an Architectural Manager with a Scottish Housebuilder, I travel to Aberdeen once a week to attend building sites in that region. Elaine is a registered childminder at home, as well as being a very busy mum.

When I am not at work I like football and golf but most of all spending time with my wonderful family.

I was born and lived for 20 years in Birmingham, where my twin brother, elder sister and parents still live. My Mum was very faithful in teaching the ways of the Lord and taking us to Church throughout my childhood. I became a Christian at around the age of 7 when I simply prayed in my bedroom to the Lord Jesus to forgive my sins and asked Him to come in to my heart to stay. I prayed a few times because I wasn’t sure God had heard me.

My Mum used to run the Sunday School in our local Church and as we became teenagers she realised the importance of us developing in a Christian environment. I started attending Christian summer camps with The Evangelisation Society, we also moved to a large Pentecostal church in Birmingham City Centre which had a thriving Youth Work. In both these environments I established friendships with fellow young Christians. I thank the Lord to this day for my Mum’s Christian witness in my formative years.

My Dad did not become a Christian until I was about 12 years of age. I remember how excited he was as he literally ran forward to the front of the Church when at the end of a Baptismal Service The Pastor of our church asked if there was anyone who would needed to get saved and would like to get baptised. They baptised him there and then! I am sure that had a profound effect on me as I went on to take the step of baptism myself at the age of 18 in the same Church. I recall the nervousness of giving my testimony in front of a congregation of 600 people, but I knew it was God’s desire to take this step of obedience to Him.

I left school at 16 years of age and started a Youth Training Scheme in a local Architects Practice. Whilst I had no idea at the time what I was going to do I can look back and see how the Lord has always gone before me in my path of employment down the years.

I moved to Liverpool with my work at the age of 20. I was there for 4 years and I became very involved in Youth and Children’s ministry in the small independent evangelical church I attended.

I first met my wife Elaine when I came to Scotland for a weeks mission in Edinburgh and Stirling. Larbert Baptist Church allowed our ministry team to sleep in the Church Hall. It is yet another testimony to God’s wonderful grace that He brought us together from so many miles apart.

Larbert Baptist Church was the first Church I had attended which had a formal membership. Not long after becoming a member I became a deacon, serving for nearly 10 years before deciding to step down about 4 years ago. I believed it was time for me to experience Church and family life and work from a different perspective, as I had been a deacon from very soon after joining the church. In the latter part of my tenure as a deacon I was involved in the Church building project, which was completed in 2001.

Elaine and myself have always had a heart for children and youth ministry and served as youth leaders in LBC for a few years when I first joined the church. I also had a spell with the Good News Club, teaching and leading the song times with my guitar. We currently continue to be involved in Sunday School teaching, Bible Class & Saturday Youth Club as well as participating in adult discipleship where the opportunity arises.

I also serve as a Trustee on the Board of Word Of Life UK The core areas of this Ministry centre around evangelising and discipling young people for Christ through Camps. This is a form of ministry which remains very dear to my heart as I can recount the vital part it played in my life throughout my teenage years.

I am now pleased to serve the church once again in the capacity of deacon in these changing and challenging times. I believe that the Church exists to equip and disciple the believers who in turn will spread the Gospel and be a witness as the Lord commands. I trust that my service in Christ may seek to do that and might also encourage those around to do likewise.
